Flower Child

Where are you, Flower Child?
You believed in magic.
Peace, freedom, and protest have stepped aside
for BMW’s, IRA’s, CEO’s.

I don’t recognize you in busy malls or executive suites,
but you are there.
Can you see the seed of peace you planted
below the surface of my smile?

Remember when we sang and played guitars in the mountains?
We were so strong then.

Once more, my soul greets the day.
Once more, the awakening.
The gentle angelus goes forth riding the wings of a new dawn.

Wind pulls at my hair, laughs in my eyes,
mocking my all-important mortal breath.

I accept the sands of soul memory that reside, lonesome in my pockets,
left from the morning we collected shells from the beach.

Flower child, do you remember?

I awaken, blurry eyed, muddled and befuddled
and stand in the world of today.
Clarity comes on silent wings.

Can peace be far behind?
