Lazarus Flower is based on a poem in my first collection of poetry, Sarah’s Garden. The poem, “Flowers,” is about blaming disabled people for being disabled:
“Tell the Star of Bethlehem caught in the mower’s blade to rise like a Lazarus Flower, Then return to me and say you understand.”
Inspired by the poem, my friend Kathleen painted an original watercolor entitled, “Lazarus Flower,” my choice as cover art for this book. Soon after, Kathleen died, but her gift inspired the poetry for Lazarus Flower. When I look at her painting, I see beauty, hope, freedom, sadness, and the power of the human spirit.
