I've been writing since I was a child, through university and beyond. I call it skywriting, because it sets me free and gives me wings to fly. My poetry books are "Sarah's Garden" (2004), "Lazarus Flower" (2008) and "Frozen Birches" (2008). Take a walk through Sarah's Garden, discover the I began my education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Following surgery at Duke Hospital, my family moved to North Carolina, where I finished my BA in English (1981). My disability prevented me from accepting offers from graduate programs, so I studied on my own, first at a community college, where I continued writing classes, all aspects of performance arts, and medical and legal terminology for technical writing. I became fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). I went on to study theology with Unity Church and was ordained in 1991. Now I am a practicing Buddhist, opening my mind and soul to a better world. Always, always I write. My husband and I live in some of the most beautiful mountains of the Blue Ridge. I am reminded of the lyrics to an old song from the late 60's, "Love is but a song we sing, fear's the way we die. You can make the mountains ring or make the angels cry." ("Get Together," The Youngbloods) To inspire and to inhale are closely related, and surrounded by such beauty, I catch my breath at every magnificent horizon. My poems and essays appear in national, and international magazines and anthologies, and I have won numerous awards and honors. To date, not including my collections, I have had approximately 100 poems published worldwide. In the 90's, I wrote a column for one of the country's prestigious chronicles published by The CFIDS Association, Inc. My column was entitled, "Dancing with the Serpent," and my essays were to assist disabled individuals living with chronic illness and to advocate for them. When it became necessary for me to work at home, I ran my own technical writing business called The Professional Edge. My grammar skills are excellent. As a contractor, I worked for the New York City Transit Authority, Little Brown's Law Division, local engineers, I even proofread the Hugo Award winners. In 1994, I founded Stained Glass Press, a small press I ran from a hospital bed with a computer and printer in my bedroom at home. The press was listed in the International Directory of Little Magazines and Small Presses. Along with several outstanding chapbooks, the press published "Skywriters: a literary journal," a quarterly journal for people with disabilities and illnesses. Eight quarterly volumes were issued, and all profits went to The CFIDS Association of America, Inc. The reviews were excellent. Along with awards and positive reviews for my books, I am listed in several editions of both Marquis' and Swarthmore's "Who's Who," including Marquis' "Who's Who in American Women: Millennium Edition" and "2008 Edition." Thanks to a good husband, love puts the smile on my face, joy in my heart, peace in my spirit. He is husband, best friend, soul mate, and courageous lion. He is my greatest inspiration. |
